What is aquaponics?

What is Aquaculture?
Aquaculture is often referred to colloquially as fish farming. It involves the cultivation of aquatic animals such as fish, shellfish or algae in aquatic environments such as ponds, basins or the ocean. Aquaculture produces fish sludge, or nutrient-rich leftovers from fish feed and feces, as a by-product.

What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants in water – completely without soil. In hydroponics, nutrient solution is added to the water to make the plants grow. Perfect for growing indoors with grow lights and saves up to 90% water compared to traditional cultivation because the water circulates in the system.

What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics combines two systems: hydroponics and aquaculture. In aquaponics, the nutrient cycle is closed, as waste products from the fish tank become nutrients for the plants instead of adding a nutrient solution. It's a circular farming method where nutrients from fish waste are absorbed by the plants, and the water is then purified by the plants before being returned to the fish tank.
About the association
The Aquaponics Network was formed to keep everyone interested in aquaponics in Sweden in touch. We are creating a meeting place where aquaponics enthusiasts can share knowledge and collaborate, regardless of whether you are a beginner or experienced.
The association was founded by students from the Aquaponics Engineering YH program at Campus Roslagen and later also teachers from the program have joined.
Visit our forum to share knowledge and collaborate.
